Analogue Fire Alarms are simpler and cheaper than addressable Fire Alarms and they are
fine for the smaller properties. In the event of activation, you can tell from the panel which
zone where the activation has occurred in.
Addressable Fire Alarms are more expensive but these are a lot more sophisticated. In the
event of an evacuation you can tell from the Control panel exactly which detector has activated.
Which Grade?
The grade of Fire alarmsystem required is dependent on the type of building, the level of fire risk and the characteristics of the occupants.
BS 5839 Grades Fire Alarms into 3 levels:
Level 1: Suitable for nursing homes and old peoples homes etc.
Automatic Fire Detection which is installed throughout the building so it provides the earliest
possible fire warning so that the longest available time for escape is achieved.
Level 2: Suitable For use in guest houses, pubs and hotels etc.
Automatic Fire Detection installed in defined parts of the building. This generally means that
automatic fire detection is installed on all escape routes and to all rooms leading off the
escape routes and to any other areas of high fire risk such as Kitchens and boiler rooms .
Level 3: Automatic Fire Detection installed to all the escape routes so as to enable all the
occupants to escape before those routes become impassable due to fire or smoke .
